IC Information
Name: Ludwig Beilschmidt / Germany
Canon: Axis Powers Hetalia
Gender: Male
Age: Less than 300 years old – born on October 3, 1814, appears 20.
History: Historical Context and APH Context .
Personality: Ludwig is the prime example of someone far too stern for his age. Despite being one of the younger nations, he prefers to approach issues and situations much like a seasoned veteran. He feels that emotions – whether positive or negative – have little weight in major decision making, and as such attempts to refrain from indulging in them. He approaches every new challenge with unbridled focus and gets easily frustrated when circumstances prevent him from concentrating.

Often times, he comes off as far too serious. Ludwig has a tendency to focus so intensely that his is unable to relax. Some would go far to say as he has a “no fun allowed” sort of personality. He often misses the humor in situations – especially in situations that he is taking seriously at the time. The idea of being “laid-back” brings Ludwig little comfort, especially when the driving forces in his life that display this trait are often embroiled in a great deal of personal chaos.

Ludwig is not one to thrive off chaotic situations. When a meeting begins to get out of hand, he is often the party to step up and attempt to enforce strict order to rein in the madness. He often resorts to barking commands in order to take control and point the meeting into a more productive direction. He has a low tolerance for the petty squabbles and side quips that others use in an attempt to “detract” from the heart of an issue, and is unafraid to call out other nations on such antics. Truthfully, Ludwig believes it has become his role to restore order in such situations, and sometimes catches himself wondering how the other nations communicated before he became a more prominent player on the global stage.

His tendency to play “by-the-book” is also remarkably literal. Whenever Ludwig becomes confused, he is quick to resort to books for the answer. This even holds true when he is attempting to figure out just how Feliciano’s personality feasibly functions. As such a firm believer in written fact, he rarely expects things to go against what is written in text. As a result, when faced with an unforeseen outcome, Ludwig is often blindsided and left to mull over how this could have happened.

Beyond simply relying on logic, Ludwig also has a stringent desire to follow a series of rules. He has a deep appreciation for the organization that rules produce in his life. He finds law to be very important, and thus has developed rather “white and black” approach towards following orders. This tendency for staunch discipline has caused him a great deal of personal conflict when faced with rules that go directly against his own solid ideas of morality.

Given his natural inclination for rules and order, he easily falls into a leadership position. He takes comfort in gaining control and handing out directives to his peers. His logical approach to situations assists him analyzing a crisis and deciding whose clear strengths work in what positions so that they may all reach a favorable outcome. Despite his ability to carry a leadership position, Ludwig also excels at following another party’s orders. He is well-equipped to handle when he should be the leader and when he should be the soldier and will not feel slighted out of the role if someone else needs to take command.

His willingness to serve comes from a deep, ingrained loyalty. Once he has developed a comradery with another person, he will do anything within reason to assist them. Even if it means putting himself in a precarious situation, Ludwig will not turn his back on someone that he deems his ally. In fact, he has trouble realigning his loyalties when there is a sudden change in a situation. Nevertheless, once he has deemed someone worthy of his devotion – he will not betray them.

With his life defined by such strict rules, it is not surprising that these habits follow him into his free time. Another person’s idea of “letting loose” only introduces more stress into Ludwig’s life, as he feels that it demands he detract attention from his own responsibilities. He finds it very difficult to drop his “professional” mannerisms, even at the request of another.

His need for order also manifests in his home life. He is a neat-freak and feels the need to compulsively clean up the messes others leave in their wake. If his surroundings are clean, then he is content. In fact, Ludwig will take to overcleaning just to keep himself busy. There is not a trace of dust in his living space – and this is exactly the image Ludwig would like to keep.

Ludwig deeply values his alone time. It’s one of the few times that he truly relaxes, because he does not have to worry about keeping the order of his surroundings or policing his own actions if he is the only one present. During his time, he will immerse himself in cooking or baking cakes (which is a secret guilty pleasure of his), playing with his dogs, or reading in peace. In solitude, he is able to immerse himself in his own work and do things at a desired pace with few detriments. This is his special brand of “relaxing.”

While he appreciates his alone time, Ludwig is not an isolationist. Especially as he begins to develop friendships, no matter how perplexing the other party is, Ludwig begins to find happiness in the presence of others. Often, he is unsure of how to approach other people and is unable to let down his guard so that the other person can appreciate his softer side. Forcing himself to be more “outgoing” and personable often leaves him feeling awkward, but the idea of being completely misunderstood is also unfavorable; thus fueling him to attempt to foster more friendships.

The concept of friendship is a confusing one to Ludwig. He had a hard time understanding people and feels as if people have a hard time understanding his own motivations. Often times his lack of comprehending why his friends do things in a certain way leads him to excessively worry over them or the situation they are involved in. Given that his friends sometimes seem to function outside of logic, Ludwig frets about the consequences of their actions and sometime wonders how even they manage to survive on a daily basis. With his concerns often comes his tendency to nag and prod those close to him into doing something in a timely manner or using specific steps in order to accomplish a goal. The tendency to fret and pick-at the one’s he loves hints at Ludwig’s protective nature towards those close in relation to him. Ludwig enjoys taking on the responsibility of being a pillar to those around him, and is not afraid to raise his voice when push comes to shove.

Part of the reason Ludwig takes pride in being a stable party in most conflicts is the idea that Ludwig feels he has something to prove. He is a young nation who was born of war and chaotic circumstances. His older brother, Gilbert, was a powerful nation at the time Ludwig’s appearance, and Ludwig wants to live up to their name. He is quick to take on his role as an example for the rest of the world, so that he can prove that, despite his age, he is wise and mature enough to make a stand.

Since he is such a young nation, Ludwig still has a deep curiosity flowing within him. He is still discovering the wonders of the world and thoroughly enjoys reading so that he can expand his knowledge. He loves to tinker and take apart objects so that he can learn how they function, and often tries to put them back together again. He has a knack for being handy around his home, and takes great joy in delving into such things. Beyond machines, he also has a deep interest in history and the events that took place before his birth. He enjoys learning from history and feels more comfortable when he understands all the facts leading into a situation.

On top of this serious, hard-working façade, Ludwig also has a gentle side. He greatly admires the art and customs of other cultures – even if he doesn’t completely understand them. He enjoys traveling and experiencing new things. Ludwig also is a nurturing person and loves to take care of his three dogs. He not only grooms them but talks to them often so that they do not feel “lonely” or out of the loop in his life. Canines trigger a deep compassion in him, and he literally cannot fathom the idea that someone would mistreat their dog. Beyond nurturing his pets – he has a tendency to nurture his older brother Gilbert and his dear friend Feliciano. He feels both of them have a serious need for guidance and stability in their lives, and he attempts to bring them this security even if it means using a “tough love” sort of demeanor.

Powers/Abilities: His status as a nation had granted him immortality for as long as the country of Germany stood. As such, he has died and revived several times over the course of his life. Ludwig is stronger than the typical human, and has a keen sense for combat and military tactics. Other abilities include his super-human cleanliness, his intense love of dogs, and shouting.

Sample: Every day, Ludwig stirred awake from a state he couldn’t describe. His mind wanted to label it “sleep,” but he swore he never lost consciousness. He could feel the boils developing under his skin and the burning sensations grating against his corneas behind closed eyelids. He could pick out the dying groans of human and structure alike. He even heard his own ragged breathes as each one tore from tremor-ridden lungs.
Every day, Ludwig became more certain that this was a Hell far worse than any fable could have painted.

Life had been stripped down to the most systematic of routines: awake, assist, survive, sleep.

And thus, every day Ludwig woke and retrieved a few more bottles of water to slip into his bag so that he could make the walk to his few remaining survives and hydrate them, treat them. The reserve he had initially created had dwindled to a mere ghost of what it had been – but to be fair, what hadn’t in the past weeks?

After he was packed, he would begin his trek from his old apartment through what had been his most beloved city. A city that now stood a towering ghost before him. Display windows had been shattered, their contents ransacked in the pandemonium that followed what was merely known as The End. Buildings stood dark, soulless without the electricity that had once flowed freely through them. The streets were silent, save for the creaking of buildings when a gust of wind blew through them. Cars littered the street, long abandoned and collecting the same thing layer of ash that the streets had as a direct result of mass cremations.

Ludwig could now make the journey without grieving. He wasn’t sure if his heart had hardened or if there was simply nothing left to break.

The trip usually caused an ache in his feet, as the skin on the soles of his feet shifted and separated from their muscles. The German hadn’t unlaced his boots in weeks for fear that most of his foot would stay in the boot were to pull them off.
Today was the day the skin finally sloughed off of his heel. It fell from the muscle much like an overcooked roast, and Ludwig had to pause and close his eyes. He put a hand to his mouth and refused to breath – because he knew if he did he would scream.

Minutes passed, Ludwig standing in the middle of that street, waiting for the raw stinging pain of his foot to subside. It never did. The exposed tendons moistened the bottom of his boot and shoved needled into his nerve endings. The weight of the bag began to cut into his shoulder, bringing blood to the surface of weakened flesh in the form of blisters.

His eyes drifted backwards and his lids scraped shut.

He took another step. And then another, in face of the new pain that began to surge through his body. His shoulders lurched. His stomach twisted before sending bile up and into his mouth. He took another step, resting his hand on the hood of a car to balance himself.

The young country spit the mixture his stomach had so graciously shared to the ground, and he swore a piece of his insides went with it. He squinted to get a better look at it, before more bile and blood began dripping from his mouth as if a faucet had been turned on. It stung the ulcers on his lips. It dribbled out of his nostrils.

The bag slid off his shoulder.

He wouldn’t make the walk today. He wouldn’t make it tomorrow.

The realization sunk into his gut. If it hadn’t already begun to disintegrate and swell on its own, the truth would’ve started it. He grit his teeth, swollen hands beginning to shake. He attempted to push back his hair, only to have another clump slide out of his skull. A tooth cracked under the pressure from his jaw.
He angrily spit the shards out.

He was going to finally die.

Ludwig turned to sit, gently lowering himself to the ground. His muscles and tendons ached. A blister popped under the friction of his pants to his abdomen. He allowed his head to lull back against the side of the automobile.

He tilted his head just to look up at the buildings that loomed overhead. These buildings had defined him; he had helped create them with his own two hands. Now they stood withered and abandoned. They had been something to be proud of.

He had been something to be proud of.

And now here he was, literally falling apart in the middle of his street. His eyes closed as he heaved in another shambling breath that was far from productive. This was the end.

And he had failed.

Mindset: Ludwig remembers his death with painstaking detail. Upon waking up, he feels a rush of confusion that then gives away to intense embarrassment and frustration. Up until the end began, Ludwig had pushed himself to be not only Europe's peacekeeper but also the world's peacekeeper. Now Ludwig has woken up and must stare this failure in the eye once more. Despite being a young country, Ludwig had truly believed that by following and laying down rules, he could change the course of history for the better. The violent end the world met proves him wrong and wounds his confidence.

He is a player of mixed emotions. He grieves for himself and for the world that he wanted to protect. He will be reclusive and may come off as unpersonable due to his own preoccupation with his thoughts.

G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Despite having faced several horrors in his short lifetime, Ludwig will be unable to handle details from the world's end. Sudden loud noises, the effects of nuclear fallout, signs of terrible illness - all of these things will shove salt into Ludwig's wounded psyche. While Ludwig has died several times before, he spends a great deal of care in avoiding such situations. Whenever he is faced with death, he will always attempt to take some sort of dignity from it though.

The guilt Ludwig feels at being unable to guide others will certainly weigh him down. The lack of control in a situation also sets Ludwig off, as he wants to be able to have some sort of pull. It allows him to feel like he can keep his head above water, if he has a slight foothold - so taking away this safety leaves him thrashing about blindly to regain control.

Ludwig is also made uneasy by what can not be explained. He is a very logical man and tends to focus on how certain function. So then, if something were to immediately defy the unspoken "rules" of reality, he is quick to become uncomfortable.
